THE STORY OF THE LAKE

Lake Fork History

A 1980 East Texas reservoir deliberately managed into a trophy-bass landmark.

Lake Fork was impounded in 1980 in the Sabine River basin near Quitman, Texas, with municipal water supply and recreation among its major uses.

Texas fisheries managers built the reservoir's modern identity around habitat, Florida-strain Largemouth Bass stocking and a restrictive harvest strategy. Florida Largemouth fingerlings have been stocked for decades, and the 16-24 inch protective slot remains central to management.

Standing timber, submerged and emergent vegetation, boat docks and natural shoreline created unusually rich bass habitat from the reservoir's early years. TPWD and partners continue habitat enhancement work.

Lake Fork's trophy reputation is not just folklore: TPWD says more than 65% of the Texas Top 50 largest bass, including the current state record, came from Lake Fork.
