LAKE MOULTRIE
Lake Moultrie spreads across about 60,400 acres in Berkeley County and forms the lower half of South Carolina’s Santee Cooper lakes. Its broad open basin, submerged humps, contour breaks, vegetation, stump-filled shallows and the protected Hatchery area create sharply different fishing environments within the same lake. Largemouth bass, crappie, shellcracker, blue and channel catfish, striped bass and other species give anglers year-round options, while Moultrie’s trophy-catfish history is known far beyond South Carolina. The lake also carries important navigation history through Pinopolis Lock and the marked route connecting the Santee Cooper system. Public ramps, new Berkeley County access, marinas and official navigation resources make it a major fishing and boating destination, but submerged timber still demands careful route planning.
