Four years of dam construction created a new North Carolina landscape

Duke Energy

Duke Energy says construction on Cowans Ford Dam began in 1959 and the hydroelectric station entered commercial operation on September 30, 1963. Lake Norman reached full pond in the following months and became the largest manmade lake in North Carolina.

The original Cowan's Ford battlefield now lies beneath Lake Norman

NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources

North Carolina historical sources identify the original site of the Revolutionary War Battle of Cowan's Ford as one of the significant places submerged by Lake Norman. General William Lee Davidson was killed there while resisting Cornwallis's crossing in 1781.

FISHERIES SCIENCE

Lake Norman is one of North Carolina's long-term F1 bass experiments

NC Wildlife Resources Commission

NCWRC is using Lake Norman to test whether stocked first-generation Largemouth Bass × Florida Bass can improve trophy potential. The agency reports 130,000 F1 fingerlings stocked in 2026. Electrofishing from 2022–2024 recaptured 15 stocked F1 fish among 424 bass sampled, and NCWRC says the sample is still too small for strong growth conclusions.

Bodie Bass wear transmitters so biologists can see Norman in three dimensions

NC Wildlife Resources Commission

NCWRC telemetry found Lake Norman Bodie Bass generally deeper in summer and winter and shallower in spring and fall. During summer stratification the fish largely stayed in the oxygenated epilimnion, even when that meant tolerating warmer water. The work turns the usual 'what depth?' question into a better one: where do temperature, oxygen and forage overlap today?

FISHERY MANAGEMENT

North Carolina targets roughly 325,000 Bodie Bass fingerlings for Norman each year

NC Wildlife Resources Commission

NCWRC's 2026 stocking list assigns 325,000 Bodie Bass fingerlings to Lake Norman, split between Stumpy Creek and Little Creek boating access areas. A separate NCWRC project stocked 130,000 F1 largemouth fingerlings in 2026, so the two numbers describe completely different fisheries programs.

Summer fish kills helped end Norman's routine Striped Bass stocking

NC Wildlife Resources Commission

NCWRC says Lake Norman's historical Striped Bass program suffered poor growth, low condition and recurring summer fish kills as cool deep water lost usable oxygen. Routine Striped Bass stocking ended after 2012 and Bodie Bass stocking began in 2013. The hybrid's greater heat tolerance has made it a better fit for Norman's summer water-column squeeze.

Genetics settled Norman's 'spot' argument: the introduced fish are Alabama Bass

NC Wildlife Resources Commission

Lake Norman anglers and older surveys often used the name Spotted Bass, but NCWRC sent suspected fish for genetic testing and found the introduced black bass were Alabama Bass. Long-term surveys showed the fish spread rapidly through the reservoir while Largemouth Bass declined in the standardized main-channel sampling. Lake Monkey keeps old 'spot' wording in historical context without turning it into modern taxonomy.

Threadfin Shad once made up more than nine-tenths of Norman's sampled pelagic forage

Duke Energy / NCDEQ file

In Duke Energy's NCDEQ-filed fish-community work, Threadfin Shad dominated Lake Norman purse-seine forage samples from 2009–2013, ranging from 88.4% to 98.3% of the annual sample. Lake Monkey treats that as powerful long-term food-web evidence, not as a claim that today's forage percentages are identical.

Sterile Grass Carp are part of Norman's battle with Hydrilla

NC Department of Environmental Quality

NCDEQ documents two major Hydrilla episodes at Lake Norman. Managers used sterile triploid Grass Carp against the first outbreak and again as the later infestation expanded around Ramsey Creek and other areas. DEQ confirmed another multi-lake sterile-carp release that included Lake Norman in spring 2024.

Norman has been sampled from more than 70 monitoring locations

Duke Energy

Duke Energy describes decades of Lake Norman water and fish monitoring across more than 70 locations. In one documented 2019 field sample, scientists collected 70 fish ranging from a small sunfish to a Common Carp nearly two feet long, with pumpkinseed among the sunfish used in fish-health testing.

Two ounces decided the 2026 Bassmaster Open on Norman

Bassmaster

Cole Huskins won the 2026 Bassmaster Open at Lake Norman with 47 pounds, 14 ounces over three days. Kyoya Fujita finished at 47-12. Huskins' decisive final-day fish came after a late switch to a Neko rig on the deep end of a main-lake dock pier near the NC 150 bridge.
